F.A.Q.

What is Street Safe?

Street Safe US is the only hands-on program for young drivers run by first responder personnel. Our goal is to foster experience and raise awareness about the dangers of driving specific to young drivers.

Why focus on teen driving?

Teens, in particular, have little driving experience generally coupled with an overconfidence of their abilities. This combination can lend itself to poor choices, easy disctractions, and unsafe driving. The most dangerous driving combination has been proven to be a 16 year old driving at night with other teens in the car.

If you are a parent and if you are to suffer that greatest of tragedies - the death of your child - the most likely cause will be a motor vehicle accident. We at StreetSafe do not pretend to be experts in teen driving solutions, but a resource available to everyone seeking options and alternatives. If you have a question about your driving teen, please contact us.

How does your program work?

Street Safe teaches teens basic driving maneuvers and also shows them how driving can be affected by distractions in the car. Common actions such as cell phone use, texting, and adjusting the music or air control are all distractions that can have serious consequences.

We set up a controlled environment where we show teens the real dangers of tailgating and try to teach them a realistic stopping distance. We also have them lose control of the vehicle at 25 mph to show that it's possible to lose control at a slow speed and we teach them recovery maneuvers.

We focus on the danger of teen drinking and driving by not only teaching teens the ramifications of drinking and driving as far as the law is concerned but we also show them how their vision is impaired with our fatal vision goggles. These goggles are used to simulate inebriation and we have them wear the goggles while operating a golf cart, throwing a ball, and performing some of the moves they would have to make if they were to be pulled over for suspicion of drinking and driving.

Not only do we teach teens basic operating procedures for driving, but we also provide them with hands on experience of what NOT to do.

In addition, teens get to interact directly with police and fire personnel teaching the course who are often first responders to motor vehicle accidents and are all too aware of the realities of teen related car accidents.

Can parents get involved with your program?

Not only do we work directly with teen drivers, but a big part of our program is teaching parents how they can make their teens better drivers. We strongly encourage parents to become involved with their teen's driving education. We educate parents about the hazards of teen driving so they know what to look out for in continuing the driver education at home. We also have district court judges talk to the teens and their parents about the ramifications of driving accidents and drinking and driving.

Does the Street Safe Driving Course replace Driver Education offered in the schools?

No - we are working to make the Street Safe teen driving program a required supplement to the Drivers Education offered in schools but for now it is a voluntary supplement to that course.

Does Street Safe offer an Alcohol Education program?

Street Safe is currently working on implementing a new Alcohol Education Program. The focus will be on all Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offenders and underage drinkers. We'll aim to show them the negative impact their actions have on our community and also teach them behavior alternatives.

Where is StreetSafe?

Street Safe is designed to be conducted in municipal, school, or church parking lots. We can easily bring our program to interested communities so please contact us if you would like to see our driving program in your area. We currently serve the District Attorney’s in New Hanover, Pender and Guilford Counties as a Traffic Court alternative to infractions and provide open StreetSafe instructional sessions throughout the Southeast region of the US.
